Powder Coating

Powder is a dry coating, and is applied in a granular form instead of being dissolved or suspended in solvent or water. The powder coating is made by mixing binders, resins, pigments, fillers and additives. These are then processed through an extruder into a homogenous mass, which is then is cooled and broken into tiny chips, which in turn are ground to a powder. The powder particles have the components can reform into a coating after oven curing. Usually through an electrostatic spray process, the powder is applied to the part, is oven and cured, and melts into a smooth film on the surface of the part. The powder is usually sprayed on in a spray booth which makes it possible to collect and reclaim it for re-use. The powder is fed pneumatically into the powder applicator / gun, a low amperage high voltage charge is applied to the powder particles which causes them to be attracted to the workpiece. Any powder suspended in the air contained in the booth is then separated and retrieved from the air using cartridge filters or a cyclone separator.

Powder coatings are melted and cured into a smooth coating film in the bake oven - the spray process takes place inside a booth.

Polyurethane powder coating systems are used as a thermal barrier in Aluminium extrusions, and strong insulating polymers, are used for the insulation of commercial of residential applications. Polyurethanes are generally used for the production of insulation and moulded parts, and polyurethane resins are used for for coatings.

A cured powder finish isn't as easily damaged than a liquid finish. Adhesion is helped by usind epoxy, acrylic, and hybrid powders. This also improves resistance to chipping, abrasion, corrosion, and chemicals. Polyester powders provide have advantages are better in ultraviolet and are more resitant to weathering. For example, Panels of different substrates are powder coated at different dry-film thicknesses, and may be pretreated with e.g. a molybdate-accelerated iron phosphate before painting. Black polyester, black epoxy-polyester hybrid, black polyurethane and black epoxy powder coatings can be used.
